The precent thesis is based on the case study of the novel Six Charpters of a Floating Life which was translated by Lin Yu-tang to expound the translator's subjectivity in the process of literary translation from the view of intertextuality. This thesis has four parts. The first part focuses on the theroy of intertextuality to which the translation circles pay much attention ,and with that I paticularlly deal with the subjectivity of the translator in the relation of intertextuality.Translators play the most active role in the process from original works to translations: on one hand, translators should give an exact expression of the original text based on a right understanding of it; on the other hand, translators should exert their subjectivity and realize a creation of the original text. The second part focuses on the translator in the location of intertextuality. Lin Yu-tang's concept of culture and his consciousness of personality are the same as what is disclosed in the Six Charpters of a Floating Life in essence. In the meantime, Lin Yu-tang's literary compositions interact with his translation, so the two form an intertextual relationship. The third part focuses on Lin Yu-tang's subjiectivity in translating the work Six charpters of a floating life.In translating the novel, Lin Yu-tang dealt with the text by the means of many intertextual finesses, which embodies the active function of the subject, here, the translator. The fouth part, a concluding part , focuses on the value of Lin Yu-tang's translation of Six charpters of a floating life and the tasks that translators should take in the process of cross-culture intercommunication. To sum up, among the literary translators of 20th century Lin Yu-tang was a ideal translator who had a double cultural identity and a capability of two languages. So , the intertextuality in his translating Six Charpters of a Floating Life is a visible feature of his translation.
