The first boom of the development of Chinese lacquering technology is in the Warring States (475-221 B.C.). Most of the lacquerwares of that time come from the graves of Chu (one of the Warring States into which China was divided during the Eastern Zhou period (770-256B.C.), occupying what is now Hubei and northern Hunan). From those lacquerwares excavated, it can be found that not only in quality, category but also in plastic arts, decorative patterns and types of color and lustre , the lacquering technology of Chu is incomparable with other temporary states and areas. However, Chu was just a small country with an area less than 100 li and was located in an uncultivated place far from Central Plains (an area comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River). Then, why could its lacquering technology advance by leaps and bounds and form its unique lacquering language? This essay will start with this problem. By investigating its natural factors, original culture and action of drawing lesson from others' advanced technology, finally a conclusion is arrived at: Chu nationality is a nationality full of adaptability. Its advanced lacquering technology is based on its original culture and make good use of the suitable climate and rich natural resources of JiangHan region. In addition, it used the advanced lacquering technology and splendid patterns of bronze ware of Central Plain for reference, absorbed the aboriginal arts and customs of the nationalities in JiangHan region, and eventually created the peculiar Chu lacquering arts, which achieved the peak of lacquering technology in the Warring States.
