Fujian Hakka Earthen Buildings In Space Research

Beijing Charter pointed out that'the globalization of technology and production modes estranged human beings and traditional regional space as well as that characteristics of regional culture were fading in which convergence of architectural environment made diversification of culture disappearing'. As one of the rarities of Chinese ancient architectures, could Hakka Earth Buildings in Yongding, Fujian Province break away from the crisis? During the process of modern urbanization, could the special culture of Hakka Earth Buildings still survive? In cities of future, could the earth building still manifest its special human and historic value and be continuously reserved? What's the special charm of its space structure? With these questions, this thesis surveyed and studied the space of Hakka Earth Building in Yongding, Fujian Province.Han Chinese immigrated southward came into the deserted forest and together started their life with great difficulties.To conduct a better and detailed study on Hakka Earth Building in Fujian, this thesis took the round building (round castle) in the group of earth buildings as the typical object for the study and made series searches and surveys centered with the round building. Firstly, the architecture environment of earth building was investigated on site and the historic and human elements influencing the formation of earth building was surveyed. Besides, from the point of natural resources around the Hakka Earth Building, natural and historic factors for the formation of earth building were searched. Then, the space features of earth building were analyzed from plane to elevation as well as from the wall to space structure so as to come to relevant conclusions. Later, from the structure and decoration style of Hakka Earth Building, the internal and external space features of earth building were further studied. Finally, enlightenment of the space of Hakka Earth Building on the current modern architectural space and space pattern design was expounded. Through study on the forming process and structural features of round earth building, material essence and cultural pith of the building were explained and approaches of further development of space design were exploited.
