Analysis Of The Song Dynasty, The Household Registration System

The household registration system is one of the most characteristic social system in ancient China, and it is on the basis of in control of population and counting property (mainly land and population). The household registration system includes almost all of the basic unit administration and social management and has a long history in ancient China. In Pre-Qin period, counting strength is the source of early population management system, which has laid a sound foundation for the later household registration system. From Pre-Qin to Qing Dynasty, the development of the household registration system and state synchronizes, and the role which in the changes and developments of the political, economic, and cultural in history is irreplaceable. China feudal society already entered the maturation period in Song Dynasty. With the development of urban economy and enhancement of central collection authority and legality, the rule of state is more open and ease, then the household register legal regime has also had the tremendous change. So researching the household registration system in Song Dynasty is the key to understand traditional society in China. The article was divided into three parts: foreword, main text, and conclusion. The main text consists of four parts, and it goes as follows:Part one is on the origin of laws and regulations of the household registration system in Song Dynasty. The origin includes laws, imperial orders and so on. "Song xing tong" contains laws and regulations about the household registration system and imperial orders have the highest legal effect.Part two is on the main content of the household registration system in Song Dynasty. People have divided into zhuhu and kehu according to property and payment of taxes. The zhuhu have divided into five ranks. The government also established special household register in order to manage conveniently. Because of complex rules of compiling household register, statistical system of household register in Song Dynasty is the most complex in history. All kinds of registration books have different contents, that were compiled in different times and were basis of tax from the people.Part three is on the relation which is between the household registration system and other related systems. The household registration system is an ignorable assistant system in the imperial examination system in Song Dynasty. The government values the household registration system which relates the finance and strength of the state. The household registration system has closely relationship with civil legal system, such as capacity, adoption system and inheritance system.Part four is synthetic evaluation of the household registration system in Song Dynasty. The household registration system conforms to development of politics, economy and law and is advanced. But the system has some defects which are inevitable. Through analyzing active roles and negative impacts, recognizes comprehensively and objectively the household registration system in Song Dynasty.The last one is the flaws that the current household registration system has. Summarize experiences of traditional household registration system to provide reference for the current household registration reform.The article quotes some historical data about Economic History, Population History and Legal History, that reflects multi-disciplinary integration. In this paper, from a legal history perspective on the household registration system in Song Dynasty as a comprehensive review, the author uses a new method to prove viewpoint. Using historical comparison method, compares the household registration system in Song Dynasty with Tang Dynasty so that reflects the characteristics of the times in Song Dynasty.
