| As the first African-American female writer who won the Novel Prize for Literature in 1993, Toni Morrison has written several high-level novels during her literary career for nearly 30 years. What runs through Morrison's creation process has always been her deep concern and sympathy for the black women's tough life experience. This thesis selects her Beloved, Jazz and Heaven which are often called "history" trilogy as the objects of text analysis. My analysis of these novels is carried on from the angle of ethical relations, mainly explaining the family ethical dilemma these black women are trapped in. Morrison points out, in order to seek selves and happiness, black women should positively adjust and rebuild all kinds of relationships including family relationships, the relationships with other women (including black women and white)etc. Besides women's efforts, Morrison calls on the joint efforts of black men as well as the whole black group. Although the American mainstream society is accountable for black people's miserable sufferings, Morrison emphasizes that African-American culture and American mainstream culture shouldn't reject and confront with each other. Black people should try for the positive integration with mainstream culture on the basis of adhering to their own Afro-American culture tradition. She hopes that after centuries of sufferings, black women are able to regain selves and all the black people can find a way leading to a harmonious development. |
