The Saturday is the most representative popular literature magazine of Modern Chinese Literary History. It established in the late Qing and early Republic of China in Shanghai, and caused two sensations of the literature market in the 20th century. As the typical magazine of the Yuanhu literature,it was not evaluated correctly. In recent years, with the development of popular literature research, researchers attached importance to literature between late Qing and New Culture Movement. In this thesis,on the basis of former researchers,I took a close reading on the first 100 issues of The Saturday, and researched the text in two aspects, which are ideological content and artistic skills. There are five chapters in the thesis. The first chapter discusses the backgrounds of The Saturday. The Saturday established in the late Qing and early Republic of China in Shanghai with its historical inevitability. The economy of Shanghai developed rapidly after 1843,and the Novel Revolution promoted the development of the novel, and the cultural consumption in Shanghai Market increased. The Saturday's slogan, which is leisure and entertainment, met the requirements of the times.ChapterⅡturns to the Love Story of The Saturday. There is less reunion in Love Story, because the marriage in the early Republic of China was not free. The young people flight against feudatorial custom, autocratic parents, even pathetic destiny. The courage in the pursuit of freedom of marriage is advanced. However, the novelist is still unable to shake off the ideological shackles of tradition.ChapterⅢdeals with the Social Story. When the country suffered from invasion, the novelists showed their social responsibility, which was based on their traditional education. In addition, the novelists, also paid attention to a wide range of social problems, including education, war and poor people.ChapterⅣis about the game novels. They created a leisure space, which mixed with Chinese legend and western entertainment factors. In addition, there are a few articles, which contact with "Saturday",to communicate with readers in a relaxing way. They are interesting advertisements of the magazine itself.ChapterⅤpays attention to artistic skills of the novels.Novelists had made a lot of attempts to improve artistic skills. To adapt to the reading habits of readers, Classical Chinese and modern Chinese were both used in the magazine.Novelists tried to change narrating style. Some new way, such as limitative narrating and flashbacks, appeared in The Saturday. The study on the first 100 issues of The Saturday indicates that it is not counter-current in the development of Chinese literature. The various contradictions that were showed on the magazine originate from the alternation between old times and the new times, also originate from the complicated educational background of the novelists. In conclusion,The Saturday, which comes from the tradition while opposes it,acts a transitional and positive role during the transfer from Classic Chinese literature to Modern Chinese literature.
