As a special system in Chinese ancient times, Sending hostage was a political way used in communication between central government and minorities, the hostages were uausally prince, minister, or aristocrat, in order to gain trust for achieving certain political intentions. The phenomena of sending hostages first appeared in the Warring States time.it gradually tuened into a system in Han Dynasty, and passed to the later dynasties, like Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang dynasties. The hostage system in Tang dynasties was almost in its perfection, and also was a more representative historical period. But the relative research haven't form a comprehensive field, in this thesis, the author try to make an overall and systematic study on this issue, base of relevant study in traditionally historical ways and the method of other relevant subjects.The thesis is divided into three parts.Part one tells the whole phenomena of sending hostages in Tang dynasty. Mainly introduce the close political relation between central government and minority groups where the hostages were from. In addition, various titles and the staying duration of the hostages for Tang dynasty is concerened, too.Part two shows the development and performance on sending hostages system in Tang dynasty.Mainly expatiated the system of sending hostages development in Han Dynasty, Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang dynasties.Part three concludes the characteristics and influence of Tang Dynasty hostage system .The phenomena of sending hostages could be wildly found among many ethnic groups, The national minorities actively dispatched the hostage to the Tang Dynasty, along with the Suwei system, Hostages hold martial posts in government and few of them even can be the envoies. Further more, the thesis points out the positive effects on the development of ethnical relationship, strengthening the management of the frontier regions, promoting the communication between inland and foontier regions, and negative aspects are also referd, but the positive role of it is emphasized more.In short, hostages sending strengthened the relations between boundary ethnic groups and central region, promoted their communication on economy and cultures, consolidated the ruling of the feudal country to the boundary regions.
