Chinese And English Language Anti-homograph

For a long time, we always focus on the relationship of word meanings, such as polysemy, homonymy, synonym and antonymy, however, contronym or we can call it auto-antoymy was ignored. In fact, contronym is not rare both in Chinese and English, which is worthy of research.This thesis carries on the research of contronym. Firstly, states the origins and developments of contronym in Chinese and English. On this base, we collect many typical contronyms in Ancient Chinese and English, and then classify them into several parts in the light of different parts of speech as verb, noun, adjective, adverb and affix. We are going to set the three kinds of relationship of antonymy as antonymy, complementarity and converseness as the basis of research to expatiate, compare and analyse the reasons of contronym and open out the commonness and dissimilarity.With the analysis we can conclude that, no matter in Chinese or English, verbal contronym belongs to the converseness, and the identity of doing and done is the the typical form of it; majority of adjectival and adverbial contronym belongs to the antonymy; when talk about nominal contronym, for it is influenced by both verb and adjective, has three forms of it. In addition, this thesis also makes an analysis and found that affixes also have contronym.The purpose of this thesis is to combine Chinese and English, by studying the contronym, analyse and study the similarities and differences both in Chinese and English in the process of development and evolution. In term of lexics and etymology, we use the method of comparative linguistics to explore the root of contronym.
