| Ang Lee,as the first Chinese winner of the "Best Director Award" in the history of Oscar, gives full play to his unique aesthetic characteristics in his films.He conveys his special understanding of humanism through his films by drawing on the merits of both Chinese and Western cultures.His distinctive features make his works widely accepted by both Chinese and Western audience,which also won him many international awards as well as high box-office earnings.From aesthetic perspective and by means of cultural studies,film narratology and film theory,this thesis aims to present a comprehensive interpretation of Ang Lee's films by analyzing their subject designs,forms of expression and aesthetic styles.Chapter one focuses on the analysis of the subject designs of Ang Lee's films from cultural perspective.The first part of it discusses the deconstruction and reconstruction of modern families in the ever-changing cultural contexts;the second part presents a thorough analysis of the world of love in Ang Lee's eyes through discussing the love stories in his films;the third part discusses the bold decision on the helpless struggle of women against their fate in a male-dominant society from feminist perspective.Chapter two elaborates the aesthetic forms of expression of Ang Lee's films on the strength of the theory of film narratology.As Susan Sontag says:"It is the form(or as what I put it,the desire of intending to face up rather than analyze) that makes an artistic work great.It is the form that gives an artistic work a perfect ending." This chapter also tries to analyze his distinctive artistic features from the perspective of smooth montage,melodic sound effect and well-designed image plane composition.Chapter three concentrates on the theoretical analysis of the aesthetic style of Ang Lee's films.The affluent accumulation of traditional Chinese culture makes Ang Lee a director with unique humanistic qualities,which gives his films the subtle beauty of "the words come to an end,but the meaning is inexhaustible".The descriptions of the suppressed emotion and free image expression embodies Ang Lee's focus on human nature,which gives his films the beauty of human nature.As a master of balance,Ang Lee is consistently pursuing a balance:the balance between tradition and modernity,the balance between the oriental and occidental cultures,the balance between commerce and art.The beauty of balance between diversified cultures will continue to be displayed in Ang Lee's films.Unlike previous study,which only focuses on the cultural comparison,this thesis presents a comprehensive analysis,from contents to forms,then to the aesthetic style.To conclude,through the analysis of the artistic and commercial features of Ang Lee's films,this thesis aims to provide Chinese film producers with some reference.Hope it will be helpful for promoting more Chinese films into international market. |
