The Sun Also Rises,a novel of ageless charm,is the masterpiece of American novelist Ernest Hemingway(1899-1961). The writer of this essay will interpret the hero Jack Barnes by utilizing the theory of Mythological and Archetypal criticism. This essay proceeds from several aspects as follows:The exordium mainly introduces the research status on The Sun Also Rises at home and abroad. Currently, seldom appear the essays which analyse the hero Jack Barnes from the angle of Archetypal criticism in China. Up to now, it seems safe to say that the Doctor and Master Dissertations related to this novel have not filled the gaps yet in domestic area.The first part is named archetype. Section one mainly aims to reveal that Jack Barnes evidently is incarnated some tinge of the author Ernest Hemingway, and therefore explores the heroes'living sources by analysing their life prototypes.Starting with the angle of Character Archetype, section two defines the term archetype, based on the predecessors'explainations.The second part regards Jack Barnes as the Archetype of Suffering Christ which has wide vitality in the history of literature, culture, and religion. The writer of this essay firstly strengths out the origin of Archetype of Suffering Christ from the above three angles, then analyses the tinge of suffering Christ in Jack Barnes who, as an genuine bullock,is perfectly expressive of bullock character—characteristic of suffering onself to save others, so that turns out to be an incarnation of modern Christ. In this novel, taking advantage of this character, Jack Barnes endeavours to maintain the harmonious relation with others and avoid frictions and conflicts.The third part takes Jack Barnes as an Archetype of Salvation. In section one, after discussing respectively Archetypes of Salvation in the history of literature, culture, and religion, the writer of this essay thoughly digs out the Archetype of Salvation in the society at that time based on the western reality in 20th century. As a man whose whiteness has suffered great injuries Jack needs to be rescued, which meanwhile is expressive of the dilemma of racial superiority at that time. Section two starts with regarding Jack as a man who needs salvation, respectively discusses Jack's methods of self-salvation: seeking in substantiality and exploring spiritually. On the one hand, Jack makes attemp to save himself under the aid of money and sexual illusion, on the other hand, he immerses himself into lyrical tradition hoping to attain spiritual peace from it, and tries to find the vigour and courage a true man is surpposed to have in the carnival bullring. However, no matter how hard he tries, he finally ends up in failure, the writer of this essay concludes the reason to be the want of traditional religious faith.The conclusion is mainly a summary about the theory of Mythological and Archetypal criticism. A combining method of Archetypal criticism and textual close reading should be carried out in the practice of literary criticim.
