Ernest Hemingway was well-known for a series of"code hero"figures and his unique narrating style .He had a widespread and profound influence on modern American literature, even on the world literature .In recent years, domestic study of Hemingway centres on his writing thought and artistic characteristics , or investigating the male figures and female figures in his works to reveal his male consciousness and female consciousness . This paper focuses on the sexual relations in Hemingway's works to see through his concept of bi-gender and display his bi-gender ideal.Hemingway paid more attention to sexual relations during the period of social gender culture transition, and presented it all-sidedly. This paper divides the sexual relations of Hemingway's works into six types.1.Type of Harmony .It indicates that men and women get on well with each other ,develop in concert and establish mutually benefical and complementary relations. For example , Jordan and Maria in"For whom the Bell Tolls", David and Marita in"The Garden of Eden".2.Type of Adaptation .It indicates that men and women always get into trouble in their love affair or marriage .After a few adjustments ,some will adapt to each other, for example , Henry and Catherine in"A Farewell to Arms";others will fail to adapt ,for example ,Harry and Hellen in"The snow of Kilimanjaro".3.Type of Opposition .It indicates that men and women are involved in sexual conflict and never reach a compromise ,then their relations break off . For example ,Jack and Brett in"The Sun Also Rises",David and Catherine in"The Garden of Eden",the Macomber couple in"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"4.Type of superiors and inferiors. It indicates that men feel superior while women feel inferior , and they are not equal in status .For example"Cat In the Rain","Hills Like White Elephants",etc.5.Type of competition. It indicates that some strong wmen are on an equal footing with men , and also bring pressure and threat to men . Pilar in"For whom the Bell Tolls"who was respected and terrified by men belongs to this type . 6.Type of Isolation . It indicates that women are isolated from men . As a result ,men's world is torn to pieces .For example,"Men Without Women","The Old Man and the sea".Next ,this paper explains Hemingway's bi-gender ideal of androgynous harmony from eco-feminism visual angle ,finds out the agreement with Woolf's thought of heterogeneous isomorphism and points out the limitation of Hemingway's bi-gender ideal .After that ,this paper analyzes four factors which influence the formation of Hemingway's concept of bi-gender : feminist movement, family background ,career competition with women and his emotional experience .At last ,by reflecting the sexual relations in the works of Hawthorne, Dreiser, Kate Chopin, Jack London, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, this paper aims to show how the sexual relations transition in American literature of the 19th and 20th century affects Hemingway .In short ,by presenting the bi-gender ideal of androgynous harmony , Hemingway made his contribution to the construction of American gender culture.
