With the expansion of economic globalization during 1990s diaspora criticism has developed into a theory involved in culture, society and economy. It commits itself to the research of identity politics, identification and double consciousnesses. This thesis attempts to analyze the mixed emotion between mother and daughter, seeking the embarrassing situation into which the first generation of Chinese Americans and their descendants. This embarrassment forces them to make a choice between American mainstream culture and traditional Chinese culture. This thesis analyses how the two generations identify their cultural identity in the collision and communication between Chinese culture and western culture. The descendants develop from their misunderstanding of mother and denying mother's love to final regrets and lasting of the love. This embodies that they identify their identity eventually and the universal mixture of cultures. Chinese culture and western culture aren't incompatible as fire and water. With the expansion of economic globalization, they tend to communicate with each other and to be harmonious.
