Postmodern Novel "breakfast Of Champions" Narrative

This thesis deeply analyzes Vonnegut's postmodern novel, Breakfast of Champions, in the light of narrative theories, which include narrative structure, narrative point of view and focalization, narrative language and narrative chronology. The thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter analyzes the narrative structure of the novel with the technique of meta-fiction, collage, montage and open ending; while the second one explains the unique narrative point of view in Breakfast of Champions based on the former classification. The third chapter focuses on analyzing the language of the novel with irony, vulgar language and defamiliarization. And the last chapter is about the traditional linear chronology and anticipation in Breakfast of Champions. Through analyzing the"disordered"form of the novel, the thesis reveals the main idea of the novel that the world is in chaos, and the influence of industrial civilization and the development of science and technology towards people's life and people have no alternative except adapting themselves to the circumstances. The purpose of the thesis is to make necessary complement to the study of Vonnegut and his works.
