In Comparative View "vanity Fair" Two Chinese Versions Of Contrast

Vanity Fair written by William Makepeace Thackeray is generally recognized as his masterpiece. In the novel, Thackeray profoundly exposes the national culture of 19th England through realism and satire, which also contributes to special artistic feature of the novel. Its Chinese translation by Yang Bi is faithful, natural, idiomatic, and vividly recreated the artistic effect of the original book. Since the cultural communication is increasingly popular and important in the current globalization trend, translation studies have shifted from a linguistic approach to a cultural approach. As a result, culture plays a vital role in valuating a translation. In this new era, Mr. Jia Wenhao and Jia Wenyuan retranslated this classic novel with a new perspective view of culture in order to preserve the original style by means of foreignization.Based on the functional equivalence theory, the thesis will do comparisons of the two translations of Vanity Fair from the aspects of sentence structure, rhetoric application and style recreation. By means of that, it is able to realize how the reasonable culture adjustments are produced and different effects are conveyed by different translators. In addition, we will further to explore the reason of respective choices in two translations from the angle of foreignization and domestication, which brings different effects to target language readers. Therefore, it is plain to see different translations are necessary and indispensable, and translations should be flexible rather than fixed. To take advantages of different translations is a great help to improve trans-cultural communication.
