《The Beijinger》is one of Cao Yu's key works and is considered to be his greatest masterpiece.《The Beijinger》plays a key roll amongst all the works that Cao Yu created it marks the upmost achievement Cao Yu had ever reached. Some researchers consider《the Beijinger》as the continuity and development of《Thunder Storm》, and take it as another attack against the old style Chinese Family. In this play, on the one hand, the writer was waving a flag of anti-tradition by criticizing the feudalism family rules, feudalism marital system and feudalism Confucian culture. At the same time, the writer didn't step into a pessimist impasse after criticizing the tradition, but proposed a flag of "primitive expectation" and moral power. On the other hand however, the writer unconsciously showed also a tendency of embracing the tradition which is indicated in his prize of the traditional life, his understanding and sympathy of traditional figures and the traditional esthetics of women. Hence, even if titled as a play" betrays and denies traditional culture",《the Beijinger》actually indicates the duality of the writer's cultural psychology, namely the co-existing of both tradition and anti-tradition.Contradiction between tradition and anti-tradition doesn't retrograde the charm of this play though, it becomes an advantage which showcases the reader a colorful self-world, and reveals the conflicts between the writer's reason and emotion, and increases the play's artistic tension. Among all the writer's works,《the Beijinger》with the co-existing of the tradition and anti-tradition is like a bridge which implies the writer's trend of the future creation. This trend makes the afterward transform of the writer's creation no wonder. This essay not only describes the co-existing of the tradition and anti-tradition in《the Beijinger》, but also goes back to the writer's childhood memory, educatioanl experience as well as his marriage life, to analyze the deeper causing of the duality. Based on the above statement, the essay is trying to explain the distribution of Cao Yu's works to the "tradition and anti-tradition" progress, and to show how this duality influences the writer's life.
