The Desperate Struggle With The Alternative Redemption

In the history of modern Chinese literary,a lot of works have described the people who has mental self-abuse tendency and made them protagonist which impressed the readers and influenced the literature progress.After the May 4th Movement,the morbid even psychotic protagonist appeared as a result of the restrain of feudal family,the backward of the social system,the influence of western culture as well as the individual psychological characteristic. The advanced idea,the needs of individual liberation,the desire to break through the unreasonable system prompted them to leave or resist.However as the gravedigger of feudal morality,this request has posed a fierce irreconcilable contradiction to the existing system.They intended to resist the powerful conservative forces,no matter how they chose--- leave,sink or perish.Although they are weak and immature,they fight with the feudal tradition to the last.The introduction of the thesis introduced the time background and the cultural reasons of these special groups that is at the turn of the old to the new culture,the Chinese was in a dilemma.Through the re-positioning of the self-abusers,from the masterpieces of the major literature schools in the first decade after May 4th Movement(1917 - 1927) ---the beginning of the twentieth century,the typical intellectual characters were classified.The paper found the symptoms of characterization by reading the novel while through integrating the time feature and psychological knowledge,analyzed this cultural phenomenon in details,traced the psychological model of this group and explored their unique meaning at that time.Although the behaviors of self-abuser are different,they have the same source---the particular time.No matter their self-abuse were the results of conflict between ideal and reality,sexual repression,or women tangled in the emotional swirl,the actual must be attributed to---they were the first awakening young people at the turn of the century with complex contradiction in their mind because they were the people of that particular time.On one hand,they resisted the imperialist aggression and cultural invasion,just like the students of create clubs in Japan who hated this nation arrogance to their bones.On the other hand they had to greet the western culture to resist the feudal chains. They loved their country,but they were in the struggle of advanced ideas and backward reality due to the weakness and seclusion of the country.This split personality is the feature of intellectuals after the May 4th Movement,they were ambivalent and depressed;therefore they released themselves through physical self-abuse and abnormal sexual imagination which became an universal psychological self-abuse of the whole society.In the series of the self-abusers,the reasons were various.One of the reasons was hidden in the environment of the social contradiction,the specialty of individual psychological character decided that they had to desert the object while abuse the subjective that of themselves.In this process of abusing,they forced other objectives to agree their thoughts.The thesis concentrated on the "awakeners" "necessaries" and pioneers who had fought at that time.The reason why we observed the image of the self-abuse on the young intellectuals was that they could more reflect the society and represent the spirit of that time which also can influence and warn the young people of today. We could understand that time and the special mental condition and psychological experience of the people lived in that time more clearly and truthfully through the self-abuse than the normal.
