Between the 1920s and the 1930s, the conflict in the field of literature was very frequent in China. The debate often ensued even if in the interior of the new literature. Lu Xun and Lin Yutang, who were both famous for their own characters in the field of literature in 1930s, also had argued about the issue of essay for three years. This argument had brought a great disturbance not only in the field of how to create an essay, but also went deep in the ideality of literature which was represented by the different view of literature, culture and life. As they were colleagues in the magazine "Yu Si", they had deep friendship. That made their debates of essay more everlasting and more complicated comparing with the debates among other schools of literature. Therefore, this thesis intensively sorts on the process of the debate between Lu Xun and Lin Yutang basing on the historical facts of that period. It mainly analyzes the principal problems which are involved in the process of the debate and then explores the deep-seated reasons that why the debate happened.
