As a world-known dramatist whom Italy rarely contributed to the theatre, Luigi Pirandello made the Italian theatre a kaleidoscope with his peculiar style at the beginning of 20th century. He, an innovator and experimentalist, cautiously keeps the tradition in his plays. He"aptly and resolutely prospered the theatre and the stage arts", and revived the Italian commedia dell'arte of 17th century in an all-around way as well. The revival witnessed its debut with the bizarre mask. On the one hand, it used tradition for reference; on the other hand, it meliorated in full scale, presenting the unduplicated Pirandello's laugh. It eventually introduced the archaic and blazing art into the modern theatre. This thesis tries to locate the subjective and objective reasons of commedia dell'arte which regenerates, develops and varies in Pirandello's plays. It also displays the panorama in which the commedia dell'arte revived all those aesthetic effects turned on by the plot outline, the role category, masks and so on. At last, this thesis tries to summarize the concept of the"new commedia dell'ate"and its profound influence on the successors.
