The word"romantic"is introduced into China from the West to express the significance of emptiness, fantasy, and exaggeration. Romantic is the liberation of imagination and emotion.Influenced by the Chinese classical art, especially the Chinese poetry, painting, calligraphy, legend and novel, Chinese drama is endowed with the spirit of romanticism from every aspect. This paper attempts to find out the spirit of romanticism from Chinese drama through discussing some aspects of Chinese drama to deliver the idea that"romanticism"is one of the important characters of Chinese drama rather than just a western import. Romanticism, which is optimistic, contributes to the fact that the drama of our nation has a general upward trend of optimism. At the same time, we must also recognize its negative impact. For example, it often weakens the intensity of the conflict and avoids an ending which is either too harsh or too sharp. It is so beautiful that dramatic conflict which is supposed to be influential in people's mind can not fulfill its function of shaking the audience's hearts. Overall, the advantages of romantic spirit outweigh the disadvantages regarding the development of the drama of our nation. Romantic spirit with strong national traits deserves our attention to its preservation and development.
