By The Generation Of Pragmatic Cognitive Analysis

In recent years,the mechanism of metonymy has been intensively studied by a great number of linguistic researchers.Though various accounts emerged,the explanation is still far from adequacy.This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive account of the comprehension of the mechanism of metonymy and its fossilization from the perceptive of cognitive linguistics and pragmatics.Chapter one deals with the argument of metonymy's Chinese translation,i.e. "Jiedai"/"Zhuanyu".On the analysis of its traditional rhetorical view and cognitive linguistic account,it is proposed that the Chinese translation "jiedai" is more proper than "zhuanyu",which also clarified the relation between the two.Chapter two covers metonymy's semantic change,which is caused by metonymy's fossilization.It is claimed that metonymy is a Pragmatics-Semantics Continuum which includes the Creative Metonymy,Conventional Metonymy and Standard Metonymy.These three kinds of metonymies have corresponding relations with particularized conversational implicature,conventional implicature and general conversational implicature respectively.Attaining conventional implicature doesn't require inference reasoning,while the other two do.After reviewing the cognitive accounts on metonymic models,Chapter three proposes three parameters for metonymy comprehension,i.e.the context,the selection of the vehicle,and the accessibility from the vehicle to the target.The last parameter is considered to be the core of accounting metonymy,as well as the key factor for metonymic reasoning.Chapter four spares a large effort on two kinds of metonymic reasoning.Combining the cognitive theory and pragmatic theory,it adopts the views of Information Principle(Levinson,2000) to illustrate the inference of metonymy's general conversational implicature,and adopts Relevance Theory to give full explanation on its inference of the particularized conversational implicature.Chapter five,considering the interaction between metonymy and metaphor,it analyses the metonymy expressions(including the ones of both metonymic and metaphorical usage) in human body parts.On the basis of body part corpus,it further proves the argument of metonymy-metaphor continuum.Chapter six applies the theory to the translation of metonymy,which has been seldom done before. Chapter seven draws the conclusions.
