Gift-preface,as a special literary style in essay form,which integrates the applicable function into literature,attained great achievement in the Tang Dynasty.Research on Tang gift-preface is of especially paramount importance to the understanding and grasping the essence of Tang literature and Tang cultural life.The thesis covers the following aspects:the review of the research on Tang gift-preface,the quantity statistics and classification of gift-preface,research on gift-preface concerned with imperial examination,spread of gift-preface essays,sending off custom of Tang Dynasty from gift-preface.First,a review of the research on Tang gift-preface is carried out and the following conclusions are drawn:Though the research on Tang gift-preface has made gratifying progress in recent years,it still comes into the uneven state.The research quality of academic thesis is relatively more penetrating than that of writing.However,the research on Tang literature taken as a whole,the scope of research on Tang gift-preface still needs to be extended further,the quality of research to be improved and the methods to be developed.Second,making out the gift-preface quantity from several large literature collections, the position of gift-preface in Tang preface could be clearly identified from its overwhelming articles.The thesis undertakes the systematic classification and collection for totally 475 pieces gift-preface in Whole Tang Literature on the basis of gifted subjects.The third part of the essay aims at the category of gift-preface inthe second part to have relevant expounding and comprehensive narration in classification,such as sending off for the official,the literate and educated without official assignment,the monks and the Taoist,the scholar out of government employment and recluse.Fourth,as imperial examination is of great importance in the cultural life of Tang Dynasty,the thesis typically chooses gift-preface concerned with it to deepen the research.It is classified into three categories as sending off for imperial examination, returning in honor with high academic achievements,encouragement for the failure, which are listed as examples and expound in the form of table respectively.The thesis also presents the social functions of describing honor when coming back and enhancing reputation of the gifted person in the gift-preface concerned with imperial examination. Fifth,the thesis mainly analyzes the effect made by Tang gift-preface in the process of the spread for Tang essays.It points out that Tang gift-preface is a literary style of highly spread efficiency.The spread of gift-preface belongs to the interpersonal communication,which is divided into two modes,namely direct and indirect spread and with examples for analysis respectively.Last,the essay summarizes some normal writing patterns of Tang gift-preface, peculiar and interesting custom description during sending off which occurred at the ending of gift-preface in most cases through the induction and reorganization for the Tang gift-preface.
