Linguists have proposed various theories to analyze conversational implicature on the basis of its important role in human communication. Because of the limitation of traditional methods, the author adopts a new theory—mental model theory to analyze the interpretation and generation of conversational implicature in hopes of making up the limitation of traditional methods. The process of mental model building is the one of inferring conversational implicature. Compared with traditional methods, its advantages lie in multi-modality and more introductions of cognitive factors, so that the inferential results will be more comprehensive and accurate. Therefore, mental model theory has been applied into daily discourses such as advertisement, Chinese Xie Hou Yu, speech and translation etc in order to prove its practicability. Further research will be made to the theory based on the above analysis, in turn; the theory can better serve in daily communication and foreign language teaching and learning.Furthermore, mental model theory can be further enriched and perfected in view of its short history in linguistics. These need the author to make further study in the future.
