Oscar Wilde as the most important and most controversial figure in 19th century best illustrates Aestheticism. He is the transitional writer who bridges the gap between Romanticism and Modernism, for he embodies qualities of both, such as Idealism and Experimentalism. The study on Oscar Wilde can be multi-dimensional from different angles. But there is no denying that Oscar is best remembered by his theories and influence of Aestheticism, which makes my study on his acceptance of Aestheticism significant. This paper will lay the foundation of further studies of Oscar Wilde and his theories.By analyzing Wilde's most important literary works, the thesis will explore his acceptance of Aestheticism. The thesis is made up of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the definition and development of Aestheticism for comparison and contrast. The second to the forth chapter study Wilde's acceptance of Aestheticism from the theme, character and the construction of an ideal society. What is also worth mentioning about Wilde is his development of Aesthetic theories and his intrinsic contradictions.
