According to"Seven Cs"Principle (i.e.completeness,concreteness,clearness, conciseness, courtesy, consideration, correctness), the linguistic expressions in business correspondence should be clear and concrete, which reveal that pragmatic vagueness is about to be avoided if possible while writing business letters. However, upon our observation, the pragmatic vagueness turns out to be widely employed in many types of business letters and brings benefits to vague the addresser a lot by making business letter more flexible, appropriate and polite. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct a comprehensive study on the pragmatic vagueness in different types of business letters. In this thesis, according to He Ziran's interpretation and classification for pragmatic vagueness, the research on the frequency and types of pragmatic vagueness operated in six different types of correspondence(sale correspondence, inquiry and quotation correspondence, counter-offer and counter-counter-offer correspondence, order and payment correspondence and claim and adjustment correspondence) is implemented. Then in the light of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, Grice's Cooperative Principle (CP) and Leech's Politeness Principle (PP), the qualitative analysis is observed after the quantitative research. Meanwhile, the pragmatic effects of pragmatic vagueness in business correspondence are illustrated and summarized. In the end, it arrives at the conclusion that pragmatic vagueness in business correspondence is the result of linguistic choices, which is adaptable to the addresser's communicative intentions, and politeness, which makes the business communication more smoothly and effectively.
