Bigger is the main character in Native Son. This thesis aims at researching into Bigger's evolution. The academic circle puts their main focus on themes and writing techniques while relatively a few critics put their focus on psychological analyses of Bigger. This thesis is focusing on Bigger's psychological development. At the beginning of this thesis, readers can see Bigger's morbid behaviors, including hatred, fear, repression and revenge. Furthermore, this thesis analyzes Bigger's developing process by means of Freud's psychoanalytic theory to probe into Bigger's psychological change: from irrationality to rationality, from unconsciousness to consciousness, from nonintrospection to introspection. Finally, this thesis researches into the profound social reasons why Bigger changes from psychological distortion to a real human being. It was the first novel about American blacks that provided a psychological probing of the consciousness of outcast, the disinherited, the generation lost in the slum jungles of American civilization. This novel deepens humans' awareness of the blacks and the society.
