Respect The Life Of The Master Of The Law And Its Contribution To The Sino-Tibetan Cultural Exchange

At present, the study on Ven Fazun(Blo-bzang-Chos-'phel) is far from deep and thorough. Meanwhile, the research of the Republic period of China mainly focuses on politics aspect, while the cultural field has not paid enough concerned and discussed. At the end of Qing Dynasty, with the demise of Qing court, Buddhism in Han inhabited areas facing the threat of disappearing, and there were many obstacles of cultural exchange and communication between Han and Tibetan. With the approaching of Western civilization and the emerging of native cultural thoughts, the traditional culture of Chinese facing the powerful challenge. Confronting the powerful cultural challenge, the deteriorated relationship between Han and Tibetan, and the uncertainty political, Han and Tibetan from the path of religion combined together to resist the external cultural challenge, strengthen the communication of Tibetan inhabited areas and inland. In the period of Republic of China, many high rank Tibetan monks came to inland to propagate the Buddhism, corresponding is a lot of Han monks marched into Tibet to learn the Tibetan Buddhism. Ven Fazun was among this learning wave. In this thesis, the author previously states the biography of Ven Fazun and his experience of learning Buddhism in Tibetan inhabited areas, and then focuses on his teaching in Han-Tibetan Buddhist Institute to illustrate his outstanding contribution to the communication and cultural exchange between Han and Tibetan.The first part, the standpoints and the anticipated target of this thesis are illustrated by the present research of Ven Fazun and the status quo of Han-Tibetan cultural exchange and communication in the academic circles. This thesis tries to research the biography of Ven Fazun and his experience of translating sutra to illustrate his great contribution to the communication and cultural exchange between Han and Tibetan.The second part, mainly discusses the karma of Ven Fazun being a monk and how he met Master Taixu and Master Dayong, with the processing of learning in Wuchang Buddhist Institute and the experience with Dayong to learn Tibetan Buddhism in Tibetan inhabited areas.The third part, focuses on the contribution of Ven Fazun when he taught in Han-Tibetan Buddhist Institute which discussed from the two aspects of managing the teaching and the translating of Tibetan Buddhism sutras.The fourth part, states his work of translating related Tibetan culture in Bodhi organization and Ethnic Publishing House after libration, and worked in China Buddhist Institute.The fifth part, Ven Fazun's contributions are illustrated from the following four aspects: translating many Tibetan Buddhism classics into Han language and writing articles about Tibetan Buddhism; translating Han Buddhism classics into Tibetan language, and publish works of Tibetan Buddhism; inviting high rank Tibetan Buddhist to propagate Buddhism in inland and sending the Han monks to study in Tibet; cultivating the Sangha of Han-Tibetan communication and cultural exchange.The sixth part, analyzes the significance of Ven Fazun's contribution to Han-Tibetan cultural exchange which mainly states from the translating the sutra which extend the historical cultural exchange between Tibetan and Han; Ven Fazun as the representative of the monks who marched into Tibet to learn Buddhism, reinforced the communication between Han and Tibetan, contacted the Han-Tibetan feelings; Ven Fazun's "Protecting Country and Guarding Buddhism" thought and his philosophy of training sangha provide the direction of Buddhism's future, which also strengthen the Han -Tibetan cultural exchange foundation.
