As a student devoting myself to the practice of oil painting, I have been thinking in the course of learning as an undergraduate and postgraduate for about seven years, over such a question on how to blend the way of viewing objective substances or oil painting works with the way of expressing in one's own language for oil painting, so as to decide on various styles and tentatively master a set of expressive devices, which is not only suitable but also effective for oneself. Starting from the research on classifying "viewing" and "expressing", this article tries to discuss respective advances and coming circumstances from different points of view, so as to pick up the relationship between the two categories in a correct way and direct the practice of oneself and some art workers tentatively involved in artistic creation. The first part of the article begins from analyzing diverse styles of visual arts, puts forward two different viewing methods through the existing research done by Wolfflin on the cause of the styles and specifically demonstrates that the diversity of expressive techniques actually is closely connected with viewing ways of the artists. The second part specifically on the views on both subjective and objective ways. The third part rationally analyzes the internal association between "viewing" and "expressing" from the perspective of philosophy and focuses on the mutually conditional and indivisible relationship between the two categories. The fourth part analyzes proper attitude a creator should keep via the influence the colleges and society make on expressive methods on different levels. "Viewing" makes us learn about the world, while "expressing" lets us reconstruct the world and create a new era, in which opportunity and challenge coexist and we should and must make correct choice.
