Georges Bizet(1838-1875), French composer, is one of the most popular composers in the history of opera. In the several masterpieces of Georges Bizet during his short life of thirty-seven years, the opera 'Carmen', witnessing the eternity of the creativity of human for its uniqueness, reflects its influence from the French racist and realist thoughts. Endowed with insightful social and moral significance and artistic value, the opera has become the milestone of the French opera and one of the most frequently performed.The opera "Carmen" stemmed from the novel with the same title by French realist author Prosper Merimee. In the opera, Georges Bizet, employing all kinds of ways to make the opera artistically and musically significant, successfully create a string of vivid images of characters like Carmen, Don Jos and Matador.The author, after reviewing the researches into this opera by our ancestors, has cognizance of the ancestors' focus on research into the protagonists and the music per se of the opera, such as the character of Carmen and matador. However, what is lack of is that fewer scholars try to carry out the research into how to conduct a performance or rehearsal of the opera, as a consequence, its influence on the professional graduate education and development. Hence, this thesis taking the perspective of a professional graduate candidate, based on the author's practical experience in the public performance of Carmen in Shaanxi Normal University, tries to propose some advice on how to rehearse and perform the opera in terms of image of art and music and the characteristic of singing, as well as some problems in the process. What is more, author also makes some simple personal views over vocal music education.The thesis consists of seven parts:The first chapter is the introduction, dealing with the significance of the present research, together with the detailed statement over the goal, content and literature review of the research.Chapter two is about some paper works about the rehearsal. This chapter can divided into four subsections: section 1 is about the introduction to Georges Bizet and the characteristics of his famous opera and makes a serious analysis about creative features of the opera 'Carmen'. Section 2 makes a thorough analysis about the opera 'Carmen' under the background from home and abroad. Section 3 is concerned with the plot of the opera, mainly dealing with relationships between protagonists and their plots. Section 4 makes a brief analysis over the proceedings of the plot and relationship between each act in a diagrammatic manner.Chapter three mainly makes an analysis over the role of Carmen. This chapter can be subdivided into two parts: part 1 is making a brief introduction to the Gypsy in the history, to learn more about the characteristics of Carmen. Part 2 is about the analysis over the personal traits on Carmen, including her merits and shortcomings.Chapter four concerns with the analysis over the musical image of opera 'Carmen'. This section can fall into three parts, dealing with the analysis over the well-known aria in the opera.Chapter five is about the personal conclusion on the rehearsal and performance of the opera. As a chapter of paramount importance, it can be divided into six subsections: sectionl is concerned with the protagonists who have made great contributions to the rehearsal and performance of the opera. Section 2 talks about the rehearsal of the opera, which proceeds according to the seven stages for the rehearsal of the opera. Section 3 is dealt with the problems in the process of rehearsal, summarizing some problems in the rehearsal from five different aspects and putting forward some advice. section 4 is about the problems in the process of public performance and the author's solution. Section 5 is about the insightful implication from the rehearsal and performance of the opera. The last section is dealt with the social significance arising from the performance. The author made a thorough analysis with a hope to make personal, though somewhat trivial contribution to how to rehearse and perform the operaChapter 6is concerned with its positive effect on the vocal music graduate education. This key chapter includes three sections, concerning with some advice on the vocal music graduate education with a hope that such a research can provide some applicable helps to the vocal music teaching practice and educational reform.The last part is the conclusion.
