Borges Poetry Metaphor Research

Poetry and metaphor share the same root, source, and nature. They express human's thought and experience with indirect and appreciable way. This thesis profoundly studies richness and uniqueness of Borges' poetry from metaphor aspect, in order to find the valuable way to explain source of problem.This thesis has four chapters:1 Chapter: Introduction. It is the precondition of study. This part included achievement status and influence of Borges; the reason and meaning of the subject; study actuality; method and goals of this study.2 Chapter: Metaphor and Poetics. They are theoretical promises for Borges' poetry study to define metaphor, clarity metaphor, simile and metonymy, find the relation between metaphor, truth, thinking, and beauty. Firstly, the meaning of metaphor and its related concepts are exported from Aristotle to modern metaphor. And we define metaphor of poetry to observe its value in literary creation. Its construction value is emphasized.3 Chapter: Metaphor of Borges' poetry. This chapter analyzes metaphor of Borges' poetry from three aspects. One goes into metaphorical meaning of two image groups in Borges' poetry (labyrinth, mirror, ego and rose, dream marble) from microcosmic aspect; The other goes into metaphorical meaning of three themes (war, time, death) appeared frequently in Borges' poetry from aspect microscopically; The last one talks about archetypal metaphor's way of appearance in Borges' poetry, and the insight of poet is emphasized.4 Chapter: Diversified Permeation between Metaphor, Religion and Culture. Metaphoratical content appeared in Borges' poetry are viewed from religion aspect, and explain them from the standpoint of culture in order to trace the origin of metaphor in Borges' poetry and illuminate metaphor in Borges' poetry in an all-round way.In Borges' poetry, metaphor is multi-strata, ranging from the surface stratum where images and fragment forming micro-metaphors to the deeper stratum where frameworks structured by religious archetypes and the external patterns constructed by words and images builds up structural metaphors. Metaphors on different stratums inter-participate and complete their metaphorical construction via the reader's reading and interpretation, thus forming a metaphorical integrity through such inter-participations. Therefore, the organic entirety of Borges' poetry is the result of the functioning of metaphorical participation and construction. In the metaphorical process, as the metaphorical vehicle, the poetic elements are bereft of their original qualities and fused into an entirety because of their inter-influence and inter-participation, thus bringing a new metaphorical meaning into being. Inother words, the three phases-----the two metaphorical constituents and the metaphoricalmeaning-----merge into a new whole and the poet's immediate experience is finally transformed intopoetry. Similarly, as two kinds' experiences, religions and cultures are also merged into an entirety on the higher level of "poetic wit". In the way, Borges' literary ideal of pursue literary possibilities from philosophy and religion realized finally.
