The Yuan Dynasty is the key period in which Chinese painting started to change from drawing objects by meticulous painting to xieyi-painting only by ink, from court painting as mainstream to literati painting as mainstream. Late Song Dynasty and Early Yuan Dynasty is just the turning point of conversion from the former to the latter. Ch'ien Hs an is an unnegligible important figure in this period. The times and many other inner factors created Ch'ien Hs an who concentrated on arts and got good achievements in the domain of landscape,figure and flower-and-bird painting. His works of flower-and-bird painting especially have specific artistic style and developing track. From "Eight Flower Picture" volume to "Flower-and-Bird Picture" volume and "White Lotus Picture" volume, from fine work of outlining and filling up colors to the trial of Cunmo(皴墨) by light color and to outlining and coloring by light ink, Ch 'ien Hs an didn't escape from technical attainment of Song people's painting and he refined the Song people's tradition of putting up colors by meticulous painting terms of his own artistic conservation and aesthetic savor. Therefore a kind of character of both expert and morale came into being. His practice made the withered meticulous flower-and-bird painting coruscate new vitality. He developed his own school on the basis of exploring predecessors' famous track and miraculous charm, which had specific and unique morale although his drawing filled with ancient techniques. He opened up a new path in the trend of literati painting in the Yuan Dynasty, which also found out a new way of sustainable development for the development of flower-and-bird painting of future generations.
