A golden and rare period in Chinese history of thoughts,May 4 Period, together with the enlightenment it proposed, opened the modernization of the society from the political system level to the culture and thoughts level, resulted in a series of great changes in areas such as economics, politics, value orientation, ideology and psychology, and ignited self-reflection and debate about the Chinese tradition by the nation.Novels by Feiming, influenced the nation for around 26 years, which witnessed different periods when the Chinese were struggling for liberation and survival. Bathed in different cultural climates of Beijing and Huangmei, and confronted with the then great social reforms and changes,Feiming was subtly affected in his cultural choices and literary pursuit.Unlike the radical attitude against the traditional culture in the May 4 Period, Feiming showed his respect and dialeticalness, instead of criticism from the perspective of feudal ethics. Amid constant exploration,he inherited and innovated the essence of traditional Chinese culture, which was by no means against the main stream of the then society, and was by all means the embodiment and supplement of the May 4 spirit,as well as the approval and affirmation of thoughts by Liang Qichao and so on. Therefore, literary works by Feiming were indeed quite unique and meaningful in that his rumination of traditional literature together with his exploration of classical literature, on the one hand, enriches the literary pattern in the early contemporary literary period, and on the other hand, keeps alive certain characteristics of traditional literature. The thesis,by means of empirical studies and comparison and contrast, and based on analysis of returning to the tradition by Feiming,is intended to explore ways of inheriting and developing traditional Chinese culture against the context of globalization.
