In the proceeding of literature, the genre of fiction may be the one which is the highest in achievement and the most profound of influence. Especially experiencing the inheritance and transformation in the genre, works of fiction have a greatest achievement in terms of subjects, materials and forms since the 20th century, which is untouchable for poetry and drama. Meanwhile, the diversity of fiction as a genre of literature still has the continued and expanding state. This thesis will explore the modern fiction which share certain characteristics and trends, then the cause and background for these features and trends. This thesis will place works of such writers, Thomas Pynchon, Umberto Eco, Orhan Pamuk and Haruki Murakami, in one collection, because the quality of these works is quite similar in shape, and some common features and trends:the quest of hero or heroine, construction for combining the factors of reality and unreality, one trend of "encyclopedic narrative". All these similarities can be seen the return of classic narrative tradition in modern, which also launched a subsequent discussion of two leads:from "quest" to detective fiction and from "construction" to science fiction. Then another background of modern fiction will emerge:popular literature.Popular literature exists as a part of literature, not the opposite. The popular literature perhaps establish many programs. And the programs make popular literary works seem to be more easily identified and have some common characteristics. While these common characteristics have some differences between the so-called mainstream literature, but the differences can also be seen as the problem of extent. As in the popular literature itself, the negative and inheritance, innovation and extension are happening everywhere.
