The development and achievement of many peoples'art is not closed or isolated. They communicate with and influence each other. The same goes for painting. The Chinese Buddhist paintings have some historical origin with the Catholic paintings of the 13th and 14th century and they have some similar techniques as well as a strong similarity of line. The theme of this thesis is to study the profound influence of two different religions on the origin of paintings. Major research methods used here are comparison and analysis. Some relevant historical documents are summarized with the analysis of historical facts and a supplementary comparison of the leading painters of the relevant paintings. From the view of documentation and in combination of the exploration through the science of religion, the thesis aims to study the differences and similarities between the Chinese Buddhist paintings and the Catholic paintings of the 13th and 14th century so that the fact can be affirmed that the two types of paintings have a long historical origin. From four angles, the thesis makes a systematic comparison between the two types of figure paintings influenced by the two different religions. It is easy to see that absorption and blending promoted greatly the development of figure paintings. Furthermore, it is realistically significant to the development of the contemporary figure paintings of China. It is valuable to the creation of Chinese paintings that we can realize the two points (absorption and blending) and know how to better use them.
