The content of this essay is the art of Huang Shen’s and Li Geng’s Chinese figure paintings. The essay consists of four parts, comparison and analysis methods mainly used in it. In the first part, we begin to know them from their life experiences and social and historical settings. Because of their similar artistic experience, their Chinese figure paintings have extinctive era characteristics, attaining high artistic level at that time. In the second part, we have done a comparative analysis about the subjects, characteristics and reasons of their figure paintings through four aspects, such as historical stories, legend of Taoism and Buddhism, working-class folk and paintings of maids with emphasis on their exploitation on the subject of working-class. In the third part, we have discussed the outstanding features of their figure paintings through the aspects of character shaping, expansion of pen and ink techniques, diversity of styles and combination of poetries, paintings and seals. The third part is the emphasis of the essay. In the last part, we have summed up their contribution to the integration of "elegance" and "vulgarness", the painting style of the literati and Chinese folk art, discussing the influence of commodity consciousness on their paintings. At last, we have reviewed the status of Huang Shen and Li Geng in the History of Chinese Painting. We are looking forward that, through the comparison and discussing of the whole essay, we can be inspired on the creation of Chinese modern figure painting.
