Narrative strategies play an indispensable role in the construction of novels, in which the novelists, sorting out and arranging the materials, elaborate on the specified connotations by way of setting up plots with suitable causes and effects so that the readers may well accept the opinions put forward. The Woman in White, the masterpiece of Wilkie Collins who is a renowned novelist of detective novels in the 19th century, is one of the splendid novels favored by the readers for its engrossed plots and expressive techniques with unique style.Drawing from the theories of narratology, the thesis focuses on the textual analysis of the structure modes and narrative strategies in The Woman in White. And it discusses the relations between the construction of suspense and the structure mode and narrative strategies through studying the masterplots, plot structures, narrative rhythm, and multi-narrative modes and multi-narrative perspectives in this book. By doing so, the thesis well demonstrates the narrative features of The Woman in White as a detective novel and illustrates Collins'outstanding artistic narrative, and meanwhile sets forth the social problems of all sorts in his time so that the readers may profoundly have a general view of Britain in the 19th century.
