Through the previous studies of the Japanese auxiliary verb 'ta', we can find out the nature of 'ta' ,which crosses three grammatical categories of tense ,aspect and mood. From the standpoint of tense it means past tense. From the standpoint of aspect it means perfective. From the standpoint of mood it means speaker's mental state. We have to admit that the three functions and meanings of auxiliary verb'ta' are remarkable achievements that linguists have accomplished by their hard work. But until now, the linguists have mainly studied the basic functions and meanings of'ta'from the perspective of semantics and syntactics. The author of this paper thinks that the studies on the special meanings and functions of'ta'that can't be totally explained from the perspective of past tense or perfective are not enough. So in this paper we call them special meanings and functions of'ta'.And it is essential for us to research them in the specific context.This paper bases on the performers'lines mainly from the Japanese TV drama programs, which include the special usages of the auxiliary verb'ta'. The author of this paper tried to research the functions and meanings of the special usages of the auxiliary verb 'ta' in context. And this paper was completed by the following methods, firstly collecting sentences from lines of the Japanese TV drama programs, then analyzing the sentences and finding out the specific context in which the sentences are used, and lastly inferring the special functions of the auxiliary verb'ta'. The structure of the paper is as follows.In the first part, the author collated and summarized the previous studies on the auxiliary verb 'ta' and then raised the questions and the position of this paper. In fact, some usages of the auxiliary verb 'ta' can not be explained reasonably either from past tense or from perfective. Until now some linguists classified them as mood. However, the author tried to use the theory of mood as base and explore these special usages and functions of auxiliary verb'ta'in the specific context.In the second part, by analyzing lines of Japanese TV drama programs, the author discussed that the special usages of the auxiliary verb 'ta' functions in the specific context, mainly from the viewpoint of intentions of speakers, long-term memory reference mark.In the last part, we drew the conclusion that the special usages of the auxiliary verb 'ta' have the special functions in the viewpoint of intentions of speakers, long-term memory reference mark and its extension of positive politeness.
