The directional verbs are very special in Chinese,they succeed the verbs and express all kinds of appending meaning. "shang/xia"are one pair of the directional verbs,which used very often.Not only do they have complicated and generalization meaning,they are also asymmetrical in the practical usage. For long time, they have been one of the hotspots in Chinese grammar.Keeping to the principle that putting description and explanation together, based on the theory of cognized linguistics, the current research make full analysis and comparison to "shang/xia".This thesis comprises five chapters.The first part introduce the reason and significance to choose this topic and the current research condition.The following two parts analyze the lexical meaning and syntactic structure of "shang/xia" fully and respectively.The paper follows the order of from description to explanation,from lexical meaning to syntactic structure,make sure that directional verb"shang/xia"both have two parts of meaning:the basic meaning and the developed meaning. Both the basic meaning mean direction and both the developed meaning mean consequent and state. Concerning to the syntactic structure,the paper choose three angles:the verb,the objects and the structure of the sentence.In the meantime,this part explores the law of the structure of in " V+shang" in the method of grammaticalization from the angle of metaphor and figure/ground segregation.The forth chapter analyze the resemblance and difference on the basis of the description.And from the angle of outstanding part of ground segregation and the cognitive prototype,this chapter uncover the reason for the asymmetrical usage of "shang/xia".At last,the fifth chapter bring forward the practical value for this topic:to offer help to the lexical and cultural lessons in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.This thesis combines the objectivity of language and the subjectivity of human's cognition,adopting the cognitive theory and method, on the basis of language user's forming process,further explains the knowledge of directional verbs"shang/xia".
