In the end of the 13th century, in the dynasty of Southern Song there emerged a poetry-composing group, named Jiang hu-Poets, who were not in power and made a living by submitting their poems to others. And before this, Cheng-zhu Neo-Confucianism found its formal place in the political stage. Neo-Confucianism became widely spread at that time and greatly appealed to students. Jiang hu-Poets were in a period in which Neo-Confucianism enjoyed increasing popularity and permeated the whole society. Since many Jiang hu-Poets gradually grew out of the atmosphere filled with Neo-Confucianism, Neo-Confucianism's influence and constraints on their literary notion can not be ignored. Therefore, the relationship between Neo-Confucianism and Jiang hu-Poets yet needs to be sorted out.Given the above discussion, based on the previous research, the thesis is to further explore the relationship between Jiang hu-Poets and Neo-Confucianism (esp. Cheng-zhu Neo-Confucianism). First of all, the thesis makes clear the influences of Neo-Confucianism on poetics theory and composition practice. Then, taking literature as the final destination, the thesis makes a tentative discussion of how Jiang hu-Poets go beyond Neo-Confucianism. In this thesis, the author makes a study and analysis of Jiang hu-Poets' philosophical poems and Neo-Confucian didactic poems of which the predecessors studied and analyzed little for the intention of making this study distinctive. Following this thought, the thesis works over the relationship between the two.The Introduction analyzes the status of the existing research on River and Lake Poets. Meanwhile, it summaries the study work done on Jiang hu-Poets in recent years, which paves the way for the later study. The first chapter selects some poets as the research objects and explains the disputes between them and Neo-Confucianism to provide historical support for the later study. The second chapter comes to the point and is the focus of the thesis. It mainly discusses Neo-Confucian impacts on the composition theory of Jiang hu Poetry, which lays a theoretical foundation for the study in the next chapter. The third chapter, selecting philosophical poems of Jiang hu-Poets and didactic poems of Neo-Confucianism mentioned seldom in previous studies, makes a study and analysis of the former by closereading texts. The fourth chapter makes a return of Jiarig hu-Poets back to literature from Neo-Confucianism. Jiang hu-Poets is not purely a kind of composition under the impacts of Neo-Confucianism, but something beyond Neo-Confucianism, with their specific literary style. The conclusion sums up the whole thesis. The thesis explores the impacts Neo-Confucianism exerted on Jiang hu-Poets while the study of the impacts of River and Lake Poets on Neo-Confucianism is left for the others.
