| Chen Hongshou, a unique painter in the history of Chinese painting, has a major impact on contemporary Chinese figure painting. He came from official families and had deep cultivation in painting, calligraphy and literature. However, the declining of the country and his family, his unfortunate personal experience, and the mental aberrations result in his grotesque and unique paintings. His paintings, traditional and highly original, have distinct aesthetic value. Based on the unique artistic style of Chen Hongshou, this paper attempts to analyze his aesthetic concepts in his figure painting sculpt, the aesthetic expression of implication, the expression of brushwork, and the expression of coloring with Chinese painting concepts, his life background, his paintings, and the civilian tendency in his works.Liberal style is the fundamental characteristic of Chinese painting. The success of the freehand concept is the key to Chinese paintings. Chen Hongshou's interpretation of the spirit of Chinese liberal style painting has reached very high realm. Subtle, connotative, and far-reaching, his aesthetic concepts still have high academic research value today. Chen Hongshou's works express his distinct language, pursue the unity of the whole, and display a moving change in unity, immersed by the traditional aesthetic concept, and at the same time filled with his original idea. In his figure painting, he represents warriors with strong and devious line, represents hermits with unrestrained brushwork, and ladies and children with light portrait, giving people strong aesthetic experience. As for the aesthetic concepts of painting, he advocates studying the charm of Tang, the rule of Song, the style of Yuan. Chen Hongshou has profound source of painting, not only following the method of the ancestors, but also understanding the "historic" aesthetic tastes and cultural connotations. As a painter in the late Ming, he also highlights the characteristics of the civilian population, and distinct personality color. His civilian sense is reflected in his creation, paying more attention to the form and subject matter of folk art on the one hand. Chen Hongshou's artistic achievements of figure painting lie in the inheritance of tradition, having profound cultural and artistic roots. He has derived a lot from other famous figures and at the same time stuck to his own insights, displaying his all-round talents in figure paintings, flower and landscape paintings, and also calligraphy. Therefore, studies of his aesthetic concepts are bound to provide a new approach of learning and research for the modern painters.The current Chinese Paintings are in a pluralistic age, when different forms and ideas bring a look of prosperity to Chinese painting art. However, in the meantime, Chinese painting creation also shows a lot of confusing disadvantages:the need of quick success takes the current concept of Chinese painting far away from China's traditional culture; the pale representation of the spiritual life weakens the cultural essence of t traditional Chinese painting; the westernized representation misses the essential feature of Chinese painting. Mr. Zong Baihua said:"A step forward of the history is often accompanied by one step backward of exploring the origin." For the painting today, the study and learning of Chen Hongshou's aesthetic concepts is of important instructive meaning to learn about the contemporary life, the pulse the time, and the value of life spirit. The life spirit of Chinese painting is just its unique pursuit of art. Without the spirit, Chinese painting will lose its essential nature and characteristics. We should pay special attention to how to make our traditional arts continue to develop, and realize the life spirit of Chinese painting.
