The book of Zhuangzi has received an adequate attention from scholars of successive dynasties ever since its birth. Some of them derived rich nourishment from it, and some made annotations and comments on it. The researches on the Zhuangzi's essays came to the ripening period in the Qing Dynasty, which represented its highest achievement.Zhuangzidujian written by Hu Wenying is a book pertaining to the analysis and comment on the book of Zhuangzi.Ever since his childhood, Hu Wenying liked reading the book and was filled with admiration about the excellent ornate wording. When reading the writings of many exegetes extensively, he found out some undesirable parts. Therefore, he set down to write the book Zhuangzidujian.Influenced by the eight parts essays, through the detailed analysis of its characters, syntax, grammar and thread of ideas in the book of Zhuangzi, Hu Wenying attempted to find out the change and artistic characteristics about the writings of Zhuangzi.Before the detailed researches about the book Zhuangzidujian, the thesis makes a brief introduction about the times and academic background about Hu Wenying. Owing to the limited researches about Hu Wenying and his book, the thesis makes a brief literature review about it. In addition, the thesis studies carefully the edition of the book of Zhuangzi used in his book and lists the works of the forefathers for which he might make a reference.Chapter two introduces the general comments and the method of reading on the book of Zhuangzi.Hu Wenying's comments on the book and Zhuangzi himself run through the whole book,which are typically represented in the brief comment of Zhuangzi. In the part, Hu wenying makes comments on Zhuangzi's morality, literary talent, virtuous conduct, knowledge and experience, and learning. And the frequently quoted part by the scholars of later ages is Zhuangzi is a affectionate man,everybody know Quyuan's grieve,they don't know Zhuangzi is sadder than Quyuan.Probably Quyuan'grieve lies in Chu,however,Zhuangzi's lies in all of the country.Quyuan's grieve is for a short time,while Zhuangzi's is for all ages." Duzhuangzhendu is about the method of reading the book of Zhuangzi, of which the most important one is making the best of Zhaoying.He said that reading Zhuangzi should make the best of zhaoying,from the right side, the oblique side,the far distance, the reverse side,then you will realize the essays of Zhuangzi.Chapter three analyzes the characters in Zhuangzidujian. With its changeful writing, only through the clear understanding of the characters and the context can we have a better knowledge of Zhuangzi. The method of explanation varies from character to character. For example, direct explanation exemplified by the synonyms in others'poems or articles;analogy in the form of "as...", or in the form of explanations using synonyms in Zhuangzi's writing, or other poems or articles; variant Chinese characters with the phonology of some characters.Chapter four introduces the comments about the organization of the book of Master Zhuang. Influenced by the eight-legged essays, Hu Wenying pointed out the presentation of the thoughts which was typically represented in the explanatory notes on the title in the seven essays of the book. Besides, he made additional remarks by using some characters and terms, for example, "niu", "chengshangqixia","zhaoying" and so on. This section is a detailed analysis about the character, syntax and grammar of the book of Master Zhuang:the syntax, for example, "daojufa", "lianhuanjufa"; the grammar, for example, "xiangjianfa", "jiefa"; the character, for example,"qi","huo"and so on; the styles of writing, for example, "zhuanbi", "tuobi","chuanbi"and so on. Also, Hu Wenying analyzed the artistic techniques and the structure of the writings.Chapter five briefly introduces the value of the book Zhuangzidujian。It analyzed the book of Zhuangzi's impact on the literature of later ages, which according to Hu Wenying, mostly reflected on the aspects of characters and compositions. He also pointed out the counterfeits of the essays which were influenced by Han yu and Su shi. In addition, this chapter also points out the shortcomings of the book,aiming to serve as the useful references. Influenced by the atmosphere at that time, Hu Wenying had a tendency of "using Confucianism to explain the book of Zhuangzi", which was a common feature among the exegetes at that time.
