As the most original and the ingenious Italian writer, Italo Calvino made a huge contribution not only to creating fictions and putting forward innovative literary theories, but also to collecting and complicating the Italian Folktales. Italian Folktales has not only reflected the history and reality of Italy but also of the whole human being. Some stories even breaks the "happy" ending of traditional folk tales, points to the contradictions and conflicts between people, the cruelty and evil of the world, and fights and crimes of people, and vividly shows the situation through fantasy the modern people's losing self- nature, their depression, loneliness, despair and helplessness.Scholars throughout history have mainly focused on the aspects as the narrative art, aesthetic styles and interpretation of the text in his work, and the study on Italian Folktales is not comprehensive enough to have a certain system and with a lot of blank spots. Based on the Marxist Theory of Alienation in modern Western society, combining with Marcuse's theory of alienation, this paper analyzes modern Western civilization and the basic living conflict reflected by some fairy tales in Italian Folktales, reveals the existence dilemma of loneliness and emptiness of modern Westerners.Analyzing the loneliness been shown by characters in "Dauntless Little John" and other folktales, the first part of this paper explains the reasons for lonely of humanity , that's self-alienation, isolation, and alienate from the nature. The second part focuses on analyzing the theme of nothingness of "Italian Fairy Tales"by the tale "Cora Fish" and others. The analyze views from the outsider, wealth, human alienation and absurdity of meaningless life to interpret fairy tales. Conclusion exposes the cultural value of fairy tales extensively: it is not only a historical memory of the past, a reflect of the status of human survival in modern society, it also points out the fate of mankind in the future. That world it provides has a practical significance beyond the meaning of children's literature category, and becomes a door leading modern people to their spiritual home.
