Language is an instrument of communication, and the ultimate aim of language teaching is to help learners develop their communicative competence. Listening comprehension is an essential language skill, is the foundation to develop other language skills.For a long period of time, the teaching of English in China has mainly pay more attention to the teaching of reading and writing and neglected the teaching of listening and speaking especially in the early stage of learning. A lot of university students often complain that they can't communicate with foreigners although they hold CET4/6 certificates.Language teaching seems to have failed to help learners develop their communicative competence.As a result, listening is a very difficult problem in learning and teaching, making itself a course demanding high teaching techniques.Based on the previous researchers and the practical situation in teaching, this thesis will focus on main listening obstacles in university students'. The author mainly analyzes the common obstacles in the teaching and learning of listening and discusses how to develop the listening strategies to improve the ability of listening comprehension.The research questions in thesis are the following:1. What barriers do students have when they do listening exercises?2. What barriers do English teachers have when they instruct students to do listening exercises?3. What methods can help students to solve listening barriers?4. What methods can help English teachers to solve listening barriers?The keystone of the thesis is to analyze the obstacle of listening comprehension of university students and discuss the effective listening strategies to eliminate the barriers and enhance listening ability.In order to find out the obstacles in listening, the author designed questionnaire to collect data. Seen from the data, the obstacles mainly lie in two aspects:1. Learning factors:including linguistic factors, listening skills and strategies and students whom self factors, for example, emotion, memory, psychological factors and background knowledge.2. Teaching factors:including meatheads of teaching.It's important for the students to realize how listening comprehension is working and actively cooperate with the teacher in order to get rid of the barriers in their English learning. And it's also important for the teachers to improve teaching techniques so as to get better teaching results.Therefore, this thesis aim at researching of listening obstacles to improve English teaching in university, to develop students' communicative competence.
