Listening comprehension has always been regarded as a passive process. However, it is an active one. In the process of listening, what the listener aims to get is an adequate understanding of what the speaker said and what the speaker referred to. However, there are many obstacles in the listening process. In view of that, we focus on finding out the obstacles in English listening comprehension based on the theories of schema and context, and research the strategies for overcoming accordingly.Language knowledge obstacles include the knowledge of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, text length, and differences between spoken language and written language among which incorrect pronunciation, intonation, lack of vocabulary and complexity of grammar structure are the main ones.Non-language knowledge obstacles mainly include the influence of traditional English listening teaching and textbooks, mental factors, listening skills and strategies, background information and culture differences, etc.Based on the research and practical teaching, the author found out the English listening comprehension obstacles, and put forward corresponding solutions. For instance, correct students'pronunciation, enlarge vocabulary, contrast the differences between British English and American English, change the traditional teacher-centered listening class to inspire students'potential, make listening material and teaching means diverse, cultivate students' listening skills, etc., so as to improve the students'listening ability.
