In recent years, the "Theory of Contentious Politics" is a very remarkable thesis in the international academe. Charles Tilly, an American famous sociologists, political scientists. This article attempts to organize the perspective of Charles Tilly’s contentious politics promotes democratization, enables us to have a clearer understanding of Contentious Politics and democratization. This paper is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction. It mainly elaborates the significance of topic and research, coordinates and remarks the research of Contentious Politics at home and abroad, settles and defines the core concept of this article. By contentious politics we mean:episodic, public, collective interaction among makers of claims and their objects. In this part, it also presents the research method, innovation and inadequacy of this article.The second part is the basic overview of the Tilly’s political theory. The first one is introducing development origin of the contentious politics theory. The second describes the concept and types of contentious politics theory. The third is analyzing the external manifestation of contentious politics which is also called collective action violence.The third part is mainly to discuss the method and process of contentious politics theory. The first is to describe the research method that is the development of the political process theory. The Second is to analyze the process of contentious politics, including the process of mobilization, identity and fighting scale change.The fourth part is trying to analyze the trend of contentious politics and democratic relationship. The content involves in the definition of democracy and to define the democratization and signs; the introduction of the track leading to the democratization, which are the strong national rail, the weak state track and middle-income countries track. Three mechanisms of democratization and political struggle in the extent to which the democracy of the catalyst, to what extent can bring to democratization. Tilly refers that social protest promote the democratization of the mechanism includes the public political change, a generic mechanism of inequality and trusting network.
