Wth a brief review of JaPanese traditional foreign policy towardsthe Southeast Asian countries, this thesis aims to give a study on JaPaneseadjusted policy in the 1990s. Further focus is put on the analysis of thebackground and content of JaPan's southeast foreign policy, as well as its, development tendency It ties to draw a conclusion on the featUres of' -Japanese diplomacy towards the southeast collntries.The first part of the thesis briefly analyzes JaPanese foreign policytowards the Southeast Asian region during the Cold War JaPan managedto resume its economic and political relations with Southeast Asia bymeans of war comPensation and economic aid, which was regarded asJaPan's first steP to resume its position in the world. As a result, a stfongeconomic ties was built between JaPan and ASEAN cotalies, which laida solid foundation for JaPan's expanding political and econamicinfluence.The second part of the thesis studies JaPanese foreign policy towardsASEAN in the post Cold Wa Era. It analyzes the background, contentand intention of the adjustthent. Guided by its natonal stfategy to becomea po1itical powef, JaPan believes it's necessary to Change its policytowards the Southeast Asian countries, and it is even imPortam tostrengthen the bilateral ties, especially in the fields of politics andsecurityThe third pat main1y explores JaPan's economic aid and economicaid to ASEAN countries during the Asia Finical Crisis. The latestcoDperation in issues conceming politics, securty culture and globalproblems between them will further be studied with some uPdatematerials.Based on the analysis and studies above, the last pat tries to revealsome key featues of JaPanese foreign policy tOwards Southeast Asia.That is: economic diplomacy plays an imPortant and unique role;JaPanese policy towards Southeast Asia was greatly influenced by the US;Allying with Southeast countries to contain China has gradually become anew tendency...
