Transportation plays a vital role in modern industrial societies.However,transportation has significant and wide-ranging environmental impacts,Itsuch as urban smog,greenhouse effect,stratospheric ozone depletion and acid deposition.Many materials associated with transportation such as used lubricating oil,transmission and brake fluids,antifreeze ^ solvents and lea d acid batteries are hazardous wastes,The paper objective was to confirm the environmental auditing is a vital tool for environmental assurance and the transportation audit is a means to improve transportation policies and practices .The paper includes five parts:Part I-Environmental Audits -A Vital Tool for Environmental ManagementAn overview is presented of environmental auditing.The following issues are discussed: evolution,definitions,objectives,important characteristics,benefits,organizational barriers and future directions.Part 2-Transportation and its Environmental ImpactsIn this part,Some environmental social and economic impacts of transportation are discussed.Part 3-Methodology for a Generic Transportation AuditA list of issues that would need to be examined as part of a comprehensive transportation audit is presented .This list of issues can be adapted to suit any organization.Part 4-Case StudyThis part,listed three cases to demonstrate the benefits that might be derived from conducting environmental audits .Part 5-Conclusions and Recommendations...
