| China's textile industry has made a great contribution to the development of China's national economy. However, with the further development of economy and change in market demand, China's textile faces a rigid situation. The contradiction between supply structure and demand structure prevents it from growing.By reviewing the development of textile starting from the 1990s and using SWOT analysis tool, this paper reveals the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of China's textile industry. By using the goals and objectives of developing China's textile industry and comparing with the restructure taken place in some foreign countries as a criterion, this paper makes some suggestions to the restructure of China's textile industry, as well as the development of Sichuan Province's textile industry. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part focuses on the description of the current situation of China's textile industry. It involves this industry's revenue, growth, foreign currency earning, employment and supports it offers to other related industries. Also, the international status of China's textile industry is identified. The second part, on the basis of the first part, conducts a SWOT analysis of China's textile industry. From the external environment perspective, the analysis finds that China's textile industry enjoys a favorable environment. The market demand continues to go up, WTO may provide new opportunities to the development of China's textile industry. Government at all levels support this industry by issuing a number of favorable policies. Yet, at the same time, because of the formation of buyer's markets both home and abroad, low quality or non-differentiated products are limited in demand. More importantly, with the technological transformation and innovation of the textile industry, and restructuring of its products, the comparative advantage the Chinese textile industry enjoys is declining. China's textile industry is confronting an intensifying competition. From internal perspective, China's textile industry still stands on a superior footing. It has a very powerful productive capacity with a wide variety of products. It is supported by rich raw materials such as cotton, wool, and linen, etc. A rich labor force in countryside can supply it with a large number of low cost workers. However, its competitiveness is reduced because of poor management, low technology and out-of-date equipment. The third part of the paper highlights the main ideas of this paper. First, it advocates the necessity of restructuring China's textile industry. China's textile industry occupies an important position in China's national economy. Restructure of this industry is a requirement of the development of China's economy. Although it is an important sector, and China is a textile country, textile industry's undesirable structure prevents it from making significant contributions to China's economic development. Second, by comparing with advanced countries such as Japan and the United States, China lays behind in terms of restructuring of textile industry and technological transformation. Only by speeding up this restructure drive, can China's textile industry further open its market. Third, the paper suggests that in order to restructuring China's textile industry, technological advance, readjustment of products and ownership reform should be done. Increase of China's textile industry's international competitiveness should be given priority. The paper also suggests that it is necessary to expand private-owned textile businesses. Based on above analyses, the paper puts forward development strategy specially designed for Sichuan textile industry. Good opportunities lie in front of Sichuan textile industry because the central government decided to exploitation and develop this industry. The paper believes that Sichuan should set up some large size textile producer groups to increase its competitiveness. Sichuan's rural area is a potential market with strategic significan... |
