After thirteen year's strenuous negotiations, China and the U.S.A. has reached an agreement on China's accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO), which means China's on the threshold of its final acceptance as a full member. In terms of banking business, according to this agreement, the realization of the accession will authorize foreign banks to brave their ways into China and take up the foreign currency business instantly, and still, after two years, to open up RMB services for internal industries, and furthermore, after five years, to operate in RMB retail services directly. In other words, foreign banks will come to be granted the citizenship treatment and consequently, limitations upon regions, customers and businesses will be totally removed. With their abundant and low-cost capital ,advanced management, diversified services, worthy talents, high-tech means as well as valuable experience, foreign banks will pound at China's domestic commercial banks and arouse harsh competitions. China Merchant's Bank (CMB), as a newly-sprung up stock business bank, although with rather adaptable mechanism, rather less heavier bad assets, rather sound market basis, rather high profit and rather skillful employees, has problems such as short history, small scale and low market share, etc. Then, on the eve of the accession, facing the competition from China's four top state-owned commercial banks, foreign banks and other internal stock commercial banks, how should CMB react? This becomes the most urgent problem."Know your enemy and yourself well, you can fight a hundred battles without defeat." In the light of this knowledge, the thesis, in all its four chapters, gives a thorough analysis, which is respectively reflected in CMB's present situation, in CMB's competitiveness in comparison with other banks internal and external, in CMB's chances and challenges brought forth by the accession, then, on such basis, puts forward efficient countermeasures to meet the impending pressure. Here come the main structure and major points of this thesis: Chapter One: CMB's Present Situation. This chapter consists mainly of a brief account of CMB and an analysis of its favorable and unfavorable factors. CMB is a newly-sprung up stock commercial bank, in its short history of thirteen years, owing to its distinguished operating mechanism, its good grasp of the opportunities for the development of banks in China's deep-going reform and opening, its excellent business scores its capital strength which ranks among the world's top 300 banks, its budding nationwide networks, its virtuous identity and sound social reputation, occupies a peculiar status in the domestic banking circle and ranks among the best stock business banks. Its identity of technical bank is beginning to take shape and both its knock-out product All-in-One card and remarkable banking services through internet meet well the international standard.Chapter two: CMB's competitiveness in comparison with other banks internal and external. After the accession, CMB's main adversaries will have to compete against China's top four state-owned business banks and other domestic stock business banks, as well as the big banks abroad, such as those of the U.S.A., Japan and Europe. By analyzing technical index figures, the thesis makes an appraisal of CMB's competitive power in terms of operation(fluidity, profitability and safety of capital)and comprehensive factors(scale, culture constructure, technology and financial innovation of the bank ).Chapter three: CMB's Chances and Challenges Brought Forth by the Accession. After the accession, with regard to its self- development, CMB will face great chances such as: 1.chances of post-development; 2. Chances to draw experience from foreign banks to improve itself; 3. chances to take advantage of a changed circumstance; 4. Chances to open up overseas services; 5.chances to adjust its structure and establish its priority. Meanwhile, CMB will also face challenges coming from competing banks internal and external a...
