A climax of discussion has been reached since Japan first called China "new world workshop" in 2001. The experts, media and even average people surged into this debate in various ways such as theses, road shows, and BBS.It is widely accepted abroad that China is the fourth World Workshop, following Britain, the United States, and Japan. On the contrary, Chinese have different attitudes and opinions---agree and disagree. Frankly speaking, the foreign views were inevitably mixed with political factors, for instance, "China---Threats" was perfectly hidden in "China---World Workshop". But if too much consideration was put into smashing political intrigues instead of looking through social realities, we can never call it scientific attitude. Therefore, it's important to find a suitable way for China's development in the future from the debate of "China---World Workshop" based on the realities of the country. With this purpose, this thesis begins from the difference of opinions outside and inside the country, and analyzes the reasons underlying it. Then by the historical clue, the main frame is constructed, summarizing the definition and background conditions of World Workshop. After that, give a conclusion whether China should be regarded as world workshop by comparing China's realities to the above analysis. At last, the thesis states out the chances and advantages as well as the challenges that China is now facing on its way to the "Fourth World Workshop".Historical and comparative measures as well as induce and deduce means are employed to make this thesis more practical and universal. Meanwhile, the sources and citations adopted are up-to-date, so a great number of them come from Internet.Fives chapters comprise this thesis, and contents of each chapters areas follows.Chapter one puts forward the issue by summarizing the different opinions both at home and abroad. Chinese hold three attitudes on this matter. Some are delighted by China's new crown; some are purely pessimistic and deem China only to be a world-processing base. Even if it finally reaches the target, it also belongs to others; and most scholars think China has potentials to be new world workshop, but still has "a long way to go". The reason of the existence of so many opinions is as the following. First, misunderstanding the concept of World Workshop; Second, different political stand; Third, different comprehension of its significance. At the end of this chapter, several key questions are put forward. What is world workshop? How will it benefit our economy? Is China the world workshop now? If not, then what?Chapter Two analyzes the status of Manufacturing Industry of Britain, the United States, and Japan in the global context when they were World Workshop from a historical point of view and on the ground of data. Answers to the first question are worked out based on their historical background respectively, which is "What is World Workshop?" Based on the historical analysis, it is defined both in extension and connotation. The extension, which is the general conditions to become World Workshop, can be classified as follows: First, innovation of production means; Second, support of advanced science and technology; Third, comparative advantage of labor force; Fourth, broad and open market; Fifth, support of policy; Sixth, support of other industries. As for the connotation, the definition of World Workshop is pointed out, with the five quantitative and qualitative standards, namely, production volume and export should account for a large proportion, there must be globally recognized brands and advanced production technology, and moreover, there must be enterprises of international competitive force.Chapter Three launches a comprehensive discussion about"China-World Workshop". Section One studies the actual situations in China from the perspectives of international proportion, the volume and structure of export goods, international brands, present technology and international enterprises, in light of the five stan...
