| With the opening and development of insurance market after China's entrance into WTO, China's insurance association faces many chances and challenges. On one hand, the insurance regulation sectors face more pressure with the intension of competition in insurance market. On the other hand, insurance companies engender inherit request of regulation because of competition. In such backgrounds, insurance association plays more and more important role as an entity of macroscopical management in the insurance market. In March of 2004, CIRC(China Insurance Regulation Committee) publishes《The guidance opinion about strengthening the construction of insurance association》.This document puts forward that we should "strengthen the construction of insurance association ". The document reflects the great expectation of CIRC to insurance association. In practice, in some local insurance markets, insurance associations have played their roles such as self-discipline. Therefore, the thesis will analyse the function of insurance association and illustrate how to play an active role based on the theoretical background of insurance association.The thesis consists of four chapters.Chapter 1 is to provide the basic concepts of insurance association. At first, the thesis introduces the history of trade association. Then, it introduces the origin and development of insurance association. At last, the thesis summarizes the definitions and characteristics of trade association and insurance association. Due to the peculiarity of insurance industry, insurance association has both the common characteristics of trade association and the special traits. The traits of insurance association include: non-profit, more neutrality and transcendency, relative oneness and multiplayer competition of their member and correspondence to insurer and insured.Chapter 2 discusses the engendering, operating and functions of insurance association. There are two sectors in the chapter. Sector one analyses the operating principles of insurance association. Self-discipline is the inherit impetus of insurance association's engendering. At the same time, it analyses the system background of insurance association's engendering. Sector two describes the functions of insurance association. The positive functions of insurance association are as follows:1,Providing information as an information resource warehouse; 2,Implementing inner punishment and realize self-discipline of insurance industry;3,coordinating external action and realize the self-protection of insurance companies;4,fostering honesty opinion and establish honesty society. On the other hand, it introduces the negative functions of insurance association mainly are these as follows:1,low efficiency due to collusion and anti-competition;2,increasing social cost in some senses.Chapter 3 introduces the actuality of insurance association in foreign countries and regions and finds relevant revelations. Trade association plays an important role in western countries and exerts huge functions in the aspect of boosting economy's development. The essay explains the reasons of the strong self-governence in western countries. Firstly, western countries pursue market economy in the long time and therefore they limit any positive interference of the government and emphasize the use of the market mechanism to adjust social economy as much as possible. So, on the one hand, the government is helpless in adjusting economy due to his limitation, on the other hand, the market is in dire need of some orders and criteria, so the trade association is very important in western countries. Secondly, they believe that the most important function is to restrict and oppose the state. The thoughts of liberalism and individualistic make people so distrust the government so that they prefer to believing themselves' abilities and managing the business by themselves' organization.
